The year is nearly over and along with the new year comes a new set of trends for website design. With the advancement of HTML5 and .js libraries, websites are becoming increasingly more interesting and easy to look at, in this article we’ll be running down our top 5 favourite new and continued trends for 2014!
5. Large Photo Backgrounds
Full width photo backgrounds used to be a norm for photography portfolios, but have since become popular within minimalistic website designs, helping to give the viewer an idea as to what the brand/subject is about, with as little information on screen as possible.
4. Large Video Backgrounds
With internet speeds becoming much quicker, it’s getting easier to use bigger files on websites, by using video streaming and jQuery plugins such as BigVideo.js, any site can instantly have interest added to it through a video playing in the background. 3. Parallax Scrolling
Parallax scrolling has been around since early animation and Nintendo video games, however, web design has recently grown to the concept, by making the visible items appear to be 3D and have depth to them. This effect looks brilliant, and has multiple uses, such as the example above, which uses parallax to show the same woman stood in the same place, but wearing different outfits as the user scrolls, making an otherwise boring slideshow, a bit more interactive!
2. Flat Design
Flat design has been taking over since Window’s Metro design, dominating over Apple’s old skeuomorphism style of things resembling how they look in real life. Flat design means that websites are becoming simpler, easier to view, with better selected colour palettes and less emphasis on gradients.

It’s undeniable that smartphones and tablets are becoming increasingly popular; 84% of people are now using their devices to browse the internet. This means that it’s more important than ever to make sure that your website fits the dimensions that your viewers devices are using – while it has slowly started in 2013, 2014 will mark the true beginning of responsive design.
